CAMPBELL RIVER STORM SIGN 2007-BORN DEFENSEMAN MINGI JANG

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC — The Campbell River Storm are proud to announce the signing of 2007-born right-handed defenseman Mingi Jang from Kyunggi High School. Jang hails from Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea, and has represented his home country twice at the U18 level with the South Korean National Team.

Jang was evaluated and recruited out of the Coquitlam Express development camp in Calgary, AB, catching the eye of the Storm coaching and scouting staff with his mobility, poise, and offensive instincts from the back end.

“Mingi is a dynamic offensive Defenseman that should thrive in our program’s style of play. He is great moving pucks up ice quickly and efficiently and has the ability to score off the rush with a quick, accurate shot,” said Storm Head Coach and General Manager Lee Stone.

Jang’s path to Campbell River was aided by the Storm’s scouting network. “Mike Nesbitt was a big part of recruiting Mingi and first introduced us to him. With the help of his advisor Wooje Sung, we were able to show Mingi that Campbell River is a great development choice and a legitimate pathway to BCHL opportunity!” Stone said.

For Jang, the decision to leave home and pursue junior hockey in Canada carries deep personal significance.

“It means a lot to me and is a very important step in my life. Coming all the way from Korea to Canada on my own was a big decision because I wanted to play with great teammates, coaches, and staff, help the team win a championship, and become a player capable of competing at a higher level,” Jang said.

“Playing junior hockey in Canada will also give me the opportunity to experience a higher level of competition than I was used to in Korea. I hope it helps me improve my hockey skills and grow not only as a better hockey player, but also as a better person,” he added.

Jang describes his game as a blend of speed, agility, and dependability. “I would describe my style of play as fast, agile, and reliable. I use my skating ability and mobility to play strong defence, then quickly transition into offence after winning the puck.”

“I take pride in moving effectively between defence and offence, supporting my forwards, creating scoring opportunities, getting plenty of shots on goal, and contributing offensively while remaining responsible defensively,” Jang said.

Looking ahead to his time in Campbell River, Jang is focused on making an immediate impact.

“I want to prove myself with the Campbell River Storm, fulfill my role on the team, and lift the championship trophy together with my teammates, coaches, and staff. I also look forward to learning from everyone around me and continuing to grow both on and off the ice,” Jang said.

Stone believes Jang’s talent and character will resonate with the Storm faithful. “We are very excited to add someone of Mingi’s calibre both on and off the ice and believe he will be a fan favourite in no time.”

The Campbell River Storm compete in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) and play their home games at Rod Brind’Amour Arena in Campbell River, BC.
