When the Storm found themselves having to trade high scoring forward Karl Hagg they at first must have been hoping for a scorer in return but instead got a steady defensemen in Chris Boyko from Oceanside they then went out and got Hagg's replacement in Abbotsford's Dan Baker who has lit the lamp so to speak since his arrival.
On Friday night Baker scored the winner in overtime against the Comox Dodge Glacier Kings with his second goal of the game then Saturday night in Sannich he scored his third goal in 2 games as the to tie the score as the Storm went on to beat the Braves 4-1 for their 11th win of the season.
Against Comox the Storm came out looking very confident after their big win against Victoria as they had two shots on goal in the first 30 seconds but it was the Kings 8 seconds into a power play at 4.36 on a Steve Charest goal that opened the scoring before Mateas Larock's first of two goals tied it up at one apiece at 8.21 then Jackson Garrett beat Richie Virtanen who made 26 saves on the night to put the Kings back in front before the 1st period was over.
The 2nd period saw Jesse Bachmeier on the power play that tied it at 2-2 at 9.19 followed by Baker's first goal at 14.53 to give the Storm their first lead of the game. The teams traded goals in the last minute of the period as Dwight Lee tied it for the Kings at 19.21 however 17 seconds later Larock's second goal sent the Storm to the dressing room with a 4-3 lead. A bump and grind third period saw neither team score until the last minute when the Kings pulled their goalie Frank Slubowski and with the extra attacker Kyle Peck fired a shot over Virtanen's left shoulder to sent it to overtime w2ith only 12 seconds remaining. In overtime 12 seconds after killing a Larock penalty Wes Agassiz stole the puck at the Kings blue line and quickly fed it to Baker who fired a hard shot past Slubowski who had made 28 saves many of them big to give the Storm the 5-4 win.
The Storm boarded their bus Saturday and headed to Sannich where they dominated the Braves by out shooting them 39-18 on their way to a 4-1 win that put them all alone in third spot two points behind Oceanside and two up on Kerry Park. The Braves opened the scoring in the first period as they got a power play goal from Thomas grant at 15.09 for the only goal that would beat Jared Beaulieu on this night. The only goal of the 2nd period saw Baker tie it up at 1-1 at 9.06 then in the third two goals in 8 seconds from Bachmeier and Agassiz put the Storm up 3-1 before captain Tyler Wowchuk salted it away with a empty net goal at 18.54 to make the final 4-1 Campbell River.
The Storm travel down Island Thursday night for a rematch with the Cougars in Victoria then return to the Rod Brind"Amour arena Sunday night to face the Pennisula Panthers. Action in the VIJHL this past week saw Victoria dump Comox 7-2 Tuesday night then 5-1 Thursday while other games saw Pennisula over Kerry Park 5-1 and Victoria 4-1 over Sannich Friday night followed by games Saturday where Oceanside hammered Sooke 11-3 and Comox out scored Pennisula 8-5 and the lone Sunday game had Kerry Park nipping Sannich 4-3. The closeness of the scores shows up in the standings as after Victoria's 32 points the remaining teams are right behind each other with Oceanside at 26,Storm at 24 ,Kerry Park at 22,Pennisula with 20 and Comox with 18 followed by Sannich well back with 9 and Sooke stuck at a 1 point.
Time out...Former Storm D-man Jeff Forsythe was recently added to team Canada West for the World Jr A Hockey Challenge in Trail while playing for Prince George in the BC Jr A Hockey League. Coming off knee surgery which has allowed him to play only 6 of his teams 22 games Forsythe has 5 points as "Skinner's" boy continues to shine..Remember Sunday night is family night where a family of 2 adults and two kids can get in for only $25..Guest three stars from Friday night 1st star Baker ..2nd star Boyko.3rd star Slubowski.
