The Storm’s 2-1 win over Victoria Cougars last Friday night not only snapped the Cougars 14 game regulation time winning streak it was the best Jr B hockey seen at the Rod Brind’Amour arena this season and quite possibly the best in a couple season’s.
While a home town win made the game that much better for local hockey fans those in attendance were treated to a hard hitting fast paced game that saw in the end Storm goalie Richie Virtanen out shine the Cougars net minder Ryan Perich who leads the league with the best average of 1.60 with another outstanding performance in pacing the Storm to their 9th win.
The league leading Cougars fresh of a narrow 2-1 the night before over Pennisula came out flying as by the 10 minute mark of the 1st period they had out shot the locals 10-1 but couldn’t rattle Virtanen who stood his ground to keep the Cougars from getting an early lead with some big saves. After surviving the first ten minutes it was a Storm power play that opened the scoring as Mateas Larock pounded in a Travis Gordon rebound at 14.32 to give the Storm a 1-0 lead on their 4th shot on goal.
After being out shot 16-6 in the 1st period the locals settled down in the 2nd period as they out shot the Cougars 7-6 and scored the period’s only goal as their power play clicked again as newcomer Dan Baker collected a rebound in the slot that he fired past Perich at 18.43 to put the Storm up 2-0 heading into the 3rd.
Entering the 3rd period with a chance to hand the Cougars their 1st loss the Storm worked hard every shift while Virtanen closed the door until 15.35 when Gary Hammond stole the puck from behind the Storm net and jammed it in to make the last 4 ˝ minutes intense. With their net minder pulled in the last minute the Cougars mustered up a couple good chances but some disapline defensive work by the Storm held them off.
The Storm were full value for the win which got the big crowd on their feet who sent the Storm off the ice with cheering still ringing around the Gardens something not seen or heard in a couple season’s.
The Storm return to action Friday night against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at the Brind’Amour arena then travel down Island Saturday night to face Sannich then on Thursday the Cougars will be out to even the score when the Storm travel to Victoria.
Action in the VIJHL this past week saw Pennisula nip Sannich 7-6 on Friday night then on Saturday Oceanside dumped Pennisula 6-3 and it was the Glacier Kings 5-3 over Sannich and 4-1 over the Braves Sunday in Sannich.
In league standings Victoria stills sits on top with 26 points 2 up on Oceanside with a game in hand followed by Kerry Park and the Storm both with 20 2 up on Pennisula while Comox moved up to 15 points ahead of Sannich’s 9 and Sooke still sits with only 1 point.
Time out……Newcomer Chris Boyko looked steady on defence Friday night while Tyson Boucher looked really good on left wing….The Kerry Park Sooke game was cancelled Sunday due to a ammonia leak at Seaparc Arena in Sooke….Final shots for Friday’s game were 31-22 Victoria….
