It would appear that the Storm now have two thief’s who can steal games as recently returned Jared Beaulieu showed last Sunday night as he came up huge with 34 saves as the Storm won the second of their home and home series with the Pennisula Panthers 3-2 in a hard hitting affair after dropping the first game Friday night in Pennisula 2-1 in overtime.
With starting goaltender Richie Virtanen stealing a couple wins with some big time games earlier in the season it was Beaulieu’s turn Sunday night before small crowd at the Rod Brind’Amour arena as the short staffed Panthers had a number a great scoring chances only be turned away by Beaulieu including a big one when the Storm were two men short early in the 2nd period.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first at 4.48 of the 1st period when Jason Yee tipped in pass from behind the net to make it 1-0 which stood up until the last minute of the period when Derek Hills blasted a point shot over Andrew Wilson’s glove to make it 1-1. In the 2nd period after watching his team mates kill off his penalty Jesse Ross stepped out of the penalty and took off down the wing then cut past a Panther defensemen and while being tripped he fired the puck past Wilson at 11.05 to put the Storm up 2-1 heading into the 3rd period.
The Storm began the 3rd on the power play and they made it count as Ross scored his 2nd goal of the night at 43 seconds to make it 3-1 which stood up until 19.49 when the Panthers with Wilson on the bench made it 3-2 but ran out of time as the Storm hung on for their 8th win of the season. The game marked the Storm début of recently traded defensemen Chris Boyko who came to the Storm from Oceanside for Karl Hagg.
On Friday night the Storm battled back after giving up the games first goal by the Panthers Greg Simpson in the 2nd period by tying it up 1-1 on a Erik Albertson goal two and a half minutes later then gave up the winning goal only 14 seconds into overtime to Kory Coward to come out on the short end of a 2-1 score
The week in the VIJHL began Thursday night with Kerry Park shutting out Pennisula 3-0 and Victoria keeping Zooke winless in a 6-3 win while Friday night saw Oceanside trip up Sannich 6-1 and on Saturday Kerry Park nipped Comox Valley 5-4 in overtime, Oceanside dumped Zooke 6-2 then Sunday Kerry Park won their 3rd game of the week by upsetting Victoria 2-1 in overtime and Zooke lost their 14th game 4-2 to Sannich.
In league standings Victoria who visit the Storm on Friday night lead the way with 11-0 mark for 24 points lead Oceanside who sit at 11-4 for 22 points but have two games in hand. After their three big wins Kerry Park at 9-4 have 20 points followed by the Storm at 8-4 for 18,Pennisula is in 5th at 8-5 for 16 with Comox at 5-8 for 11 points trailed by Sannich at 4-11 for 8 points and Zooke at 0-14 with only 1 point.
Time Out…….Friday night’s game against the Cougars is the only weekend game for the Storm who don’t play again until November 2nd at home against Comox then travel the next night to Sannich then return to road on Thursday the 8th to play in Victoria….Look for Friday night’s game to be maybe be the best of the season so far…...After what was first a shock to those NOT in know the Hagg trade was done for the team which doesn’t have a i in it!!!!!......Do I need to say anymore…..
