After a big weekend where the Storm shut out the Comox Glacier Kings then shut down the Kerry Park Islanders their fortunes this past weekend were very mixed as they barely beat the pesky last place Zooke Stingers on Friday night then lost for the 2nd time this season the next night to the 2nd last team in Sannich to the Braves.
Both games saw the Storm fall behind with them being able to comeback down 2-0 to the Stingers to win 3-2 however they weren't able to come back after being down 3-0 to the Braves to lose 3-2.
On Friday night the Stingers played like a bunch of bee's as they were pesky all night skating hard thru-out the whole game and looked to be on their way to the first win but gave up two third period goals to the Storm to remain winnless this season.
A power -play goal at 4.57 of the 1st period by Trevor McNeil after two big saves by Richie Virtanen put the Stingers up 1-0 and before the 2nd period was a minute old they used their power play again to make it 2-0 as a great pass from Bryce Twa put Matthew Demedeiros in all alone in on Virtanen and he made no mistake in beating the Storm netminder at the 35 second mark.
The Storm put their power play to work to get back in the game as Mateas Larock converted a 2 on 1 with Travis Gordon at 3.21 to make it 2-1 which stayed that way untill the third period. In the 3rd a shot of the back boards from Tyler Wowchuk found the stick of Jesse Ross as he scored the only even strength goal of the game at 5.02 to make it 2-2. After keeping his team in the game with some big saves it was a soft goal that beat Stinger goalie Matt Walker as a power play goal from out side the faceoff circle by Brad Gurr at 6.46 slid under his pad to give the Storm the lead 3-2. The Storm almost made it 4-2 but a long shot on the empty net from Dylan Behan hit the goal post as the Storm hung on for their 7th win while Sooke collected their 10th loss.
On Saturday night in Sannich the Braves collected their 3rd win of the season their 2nd againest the Storm after jumping out to a 3-0 lead then hung on to nip the locals 3-2 to hand them their 4th loss. After a scoreless first period the Braves got on the scoreborad first as Ryan Komori made it 1-0 at 6.29 then two power play goals 17 seconds apart from Darren Cambruzzi and Pat Sails had the Braves up 3-0 before Travis Gordon got his own power play goal to make it 3-1 before the 2nd period was over in a period that saw Sannich out shot the Storm 13-2. The Storm got back in the game with a even strength goal from Mateas Larock at 6.20 to make it 3-2 but that was as close as they would come as the Braves evened the season series between the two teams at one win a piece.
Team on the move over the weekend was Oceanside as they grabbed three wins the biggest coming Saturday night as they upended the undefeated and first place Victoria Cougars 4-3 in overtime.Other games saw Victoria shutout Kerry Park Thursday night 4-0 on Friday Kerry Park beat Sannich 5-3 it was Oceanside 6-2 over Comox on Saturday Pennisula dumped Kerry Park 4-2 it Comox over Sooke 7-2 then on Sunday it was Pennisula 5-3 over Sannich and Oceanside nipped Comox 4-3. In league standings Victoria leads with 21 points followed by Oceanside at 18 followed by Campbell River at 15, Pennisula and Kerry Park have 14, Comox 10 points Sanich with 6 and Zooke sit with just 1 point.
The Storm retuen to action Friday night with a road game as they travel to Pennisula with the return game Sunday night at the Gardens....Would be nice to see a different refferee as it almost seems that the one who has done the last three home games ruins the flow of the game with his inconsistent calls and his need to call so many penalties that have nothing to do with the actuall play at the time...Remember this is the Eye of the Storm which comes from the eyes of a fan!!!!
Time out....A shocker to some and not to others with the news that sniper Karl Hagg was released from the Storm as well as goaltender Tyler Bachmeier who was replaced on the roster by Jared Beaulieu who played very well last season with the Storm...
