A 5-0 win over rival Comox Valley Friday night then a big 5-3 road win over Kerry Park the following night moved the Storm into second place in the VIJHL highlighted a big weekend for the guys as they get set to host the Zooke Stingers Friday night at the Gardens.Due to problems with the VIJHL web site stats for the Kerry Park game were unavaiable for this report.
The 5-0 score wasn't a indication of the game as the Glacier Kings found out like Kerry Park and Oceanside about Storm goaltender Richie Virtanen as he made 8 super stops on the Kings while his team mates found some offense after only being able to pot 2 goals the week before againest the Sannich Braves.
The first period was a close checking affair with the teams only mustering 5 shots a piece with Erik Albertson giving the Storm a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermisson. After the break the Storm came out flying as they had 5 shots in the first minute and thirty seconds and were able to get a power play goal from Wes Agassiz at 1.07 to move ahead 2-0 and before the 2nd period was over they had outshot the Kings 16-6 and got another powerplay marker from Travis Gordon to make it 3-0 heading into the 3rd period.
In the 3rd period Gordon potted his 2nd of the night to make it 4-0 with recently returned Karl Hagg collecting his first point of the season then Jesse Ross closed out the scoring to make it 5-0 leaving up to Virtanen to close the door the rest of the way to give him his 1st shutout in a Storm uniform as they evened their season series with the Kings at 1 win each after the Kings beat the Storm 3-2 in Courtenay earlier in the season.
The 5-0 shut-out for the Storm was the first of two in the league over the weekend as Oceanside shut out the Sannich Braves 8-0 on Saturday while other games saw Victoria stay undeafted by nipping Zooke 4-2 who also got hammered 11-1 by Pennisula Thursday night.Following their meeting with Zooke Friday night the Storm head out on the road Saturday night as travel to Sannich looking for revenge of their 4-2 home ice loss to the Braves.
Other games this busy week have the Islanders looking to snap the Cougars 8 game winning streak in Victoria Thursday night while Friday night Comox hosts Oceanside,Kerry Park at Pennisula then Saturday Victoria travels to Oceanside,Comox is at Zooke then Sunday Comox `s third weekend game has them in Oceanside for their third weekend game and Pennisula visits Sannich..
In league standings Victoria leads the way with 16 points followed by a log jam lead by the Storm at 13,Kerry Park and Oceanside at 12, Pennisula at 10 and Comox Valley with 8 points and Sannich at 4 and Zooke with sitting with just 1 point.
While the Stingers are winnless so far this season they have been in most games this season except their game againest Pennisula and the have the top two scorers in the league this season in James Kellington and Daniel Bell but have had problems stopping goals as they have three games this season where they scored 6 or more goals only to lose.
Time out......A correction on last weeks Eye of the Storm as it stated that they Storm where winnless on the road which was wrong as they beat Zooke 7-2 earlier in the season in Zooke..you were right Vern!!....Haggs first game saw the Glacier Kings keying on him all night not allowing him much room however he was able to get a couple good shots off including one off the cross bar...Game to mark on the calender is October 26th as Victoria comes to town...
