The season is over for this years edition of the Storm as they fell 2-1 Tuesday night to the Kerry Park Islanders who won the best of 7 North Island semi final series in 4 straight games and now move on to face the Oceanside Generals in the North Island finals who beat Comox Tuesday night 4-3 to also win their series in 4 games.
After finishing just one point behind the Islanders in league standings the Storm inexperience just couldn’t match the Islanders line-up that featured 8 20 year old players compared to the Storm’s 2 and in the end the experience won the Islanders the series.
Game four before another disappointing small crowd saw the Islanders smother the Storm all night as they continually intercepted Storm passes and didn’t allow the Storm get any fast break outs as the basically played the game that they needed to play to win and to their credit they played it perfectly and came away with the win and the series.
Tuesday night saw the teams go scoreless in the first period where both teams had 13 shots in the second the Islanders got the games first goal to take a 1-0 lead into the all important third period. In the 3rd the Islanders made it 2-0 and just when it looked like the Storm were done like dinner they made it 2-1 as Travis Gordon fired a shot that rung off the inside upper goal post to make the finish interesting. To the Storm’s credit they never gave up and once they pulled goalie Richie Virtanen with 1.43 left they pressed hard to get the equalizer but the Islanders defence held up and they were able to squash any Storm chance to squeak out the 2-1 win.
For the Storm the first round loss matches last season’s play off exit where they lost 4 straight to the Generals however the ground work is set up for a big season next year as they only loose captain Tyler Wowchuck and late addition Mark Mahattie from their line up as over age players and if the remaining players return the team can look forward to being a strong team in 08-09.
Time out…..After complaining about the referring during the season Tuesday night Randy Thomas called a good game as he allowed the players to play the game and that is all any fan can hope for…..A big tip of the hat to out going captain Tyler Wowchuck who came out every night and worked hard and wore the “C” on his sweater with pride and represented Campbell River proudly…Thanks for your years in C.R .Tyler!!!!....To the Storm you may have finished the season with a loss but you did it with class and should be proud of that!!!!....Thank you from all your fans….As well thank you to all who read my report and to those who kindly said they enjoyed it however I must now report that the Eye of the Storm is now closed for the year……..Remember racing starts it May at Saratoga Speedway see you there!!!!
