It took the overtime in the season’s final game to decide home ice advantage between the Storm and Kerry Park and when the 48th game was over it was the Islanders with their sticks raised in a 4-3 win to earn the right to have 4 of the 7 semi finals games in their arena.
The 4-3 overtime win came on the heels of a last minute game winning goal by the Storm the previous night at home to send the teams into the final game tied in points.
The 4-3 final game score was the 3rd straight game for the Storm where 4 goals got the winners the win after a 4-1 Storm win Thursday night in Courtenay against the Glacier Kings.
The Saturday night game in Kerry Park had the Storm up 3-0 heading into the third period but three unanswered Islander goals sent it into overtime where the Islanders began on the power play which they made the Storm pay for as they got the winner at 1.32 to set up game one of the best of seven North Island semi final beginning Tuesday night with game two Friday night.
The playoff match up will see the first two games played in Kerry Park followed by three games in Campbell River then if necessary the last two will be played in Kerry Park. The first play off game in Campbell River will be Sunday night followed by games on Tuesday and if necessary Friday night.
To make the last game meaningful the Storm scored with 6.2 seconds remaining on Friday night to snatch the 4-3 win on Travis Gordon’s 3rd goal of the night in a well played game that saw a entertaining 3 periods of hockey that featured lots of fast skating as the teams stuck to playing hockey and not bothering with any unnecessary aggressive play that has been seen in many games this season.
Other play off match ups have Victoria earning the right to play power less Sooke, Pennisula faces off with Sannich and Oceanside battles Comox in the other North semi final.
Game one on Tuesday night saw the Islanders go up 1-0 in the series with a 3-2 win while in the other North series opener it was Oceanside making it a home team sweep by pounding the Glacier Kings 10-1 to also go up 1-0 in their series.
Time out... Eye of the Storm was missing last week due to wrist injury problem or in hockey terms…”A upper body injury!!”…..Guest picks have Storm in 6 over the Islanders…Oceanside in 5 over Comox, Peninsula in 5 over Sannich and Sooke over Victoria yea right…Cougars 4 straight …2nd round will see Oceanside over the Storm and Victoria over Pennisula then in the final I can really see Oceanside beating Victoria….for the Storm to have any chance in the play offs we as fans need to leave are hats at the door and cheer and make as much noise as we can and basically make fools of our self’s ( I will if you will!!) and not care!!!!..So when Brandon in section A starts with his Go Storm Go chant let’s help him out and rock the place!!!!!!
