Another big home ice win over the league leading Victoria Cougars Friday night was over shadowed by a road loss to the suddenly improved Sannich Braves who added the Storm to their list of recent upsets on Sunday afternoon.
The Friday night 4-3 win over Victoria was even more impressive by the Storm due to the absence of Derek Hills, Jesse Bachmeier, Dan Baker and Calen Falk and their ability to kill 8 Cougar power plays in a game that featured some questionable refereeing.
The Cougars who have sat in first thru-out this season seemed to no wrong as they awarded 10 power plays to the Storms 5 in a hard hitting game that saw the Storm score first then come from behind to score the only goal of the 3rd period to win their 3rd game of the season against the Cougars.
The Cougars came into Friday’s game fresh off a 7-3 loss the night before against the Pennisula Panthers and they looked to be ready to make amends for the loss as they came out hitting and skating hard in attempts to take the game away form the Storm and with power plays falling into their laps it looked to be a long night for the Storm.
It only took 1 minute for the games first goal and it came off the stick of Wes Agassiz who popped home a rebound to put the Storm up 1-0 before the Cougars leading scorer TJ Liebel tied it up 1-1 at 5.15. The first of two power play goals for Victoria came only 11 seconds after the power play started as Steve Little put Victoria up 2-1 before the Storm connected of a 2 man advantage as James Isaacs blasted home a point shot to tie it at 2-2 before the period was over.
Once again a great scoring chance at one end was missed and one at the other end connected as Liebel was robbed by Richie Virtanen with a great glove save then 9 seconds later Mateas Larock fed Erik Albertson a perfect pass to put him in all alone and made no mistake to put the Storm up 3-2. With having gained some momentum the Storm found themselves once again short handed and the Cougars made them pay as Mark Stinson tied it up at 3-3 before the 2nd period was up in a period in which the Cougars out shot the Storm 16-6.
The third period once again saw the Storm on the ropes as they were forced to kill more penalties and they came up big in not allowing the high flying Cougar power play any more goals. The loudest cheer of the season came just after the loudest boo as captain Tyler Wowchuck took a highly questionable interference penalty and shortly after the Storm killed it of Jesse Ross intercepted a clearing pass at the Cougar blue line and took a couple strides before blasting home the winning goal that sent the big crowd into a frenzy. The Cougars called a time out with 1.23 remaining and pulled their goalie but the Storm wouldn’t fold as they hung on to their 4-3 lead and came away with a big win.
On Sunday the Storm travelled to Sannich to face the Braves who recently defeated the Oceanside Generals 3-2 in Oceanside and beat Pennisula at home for their two of their biggest wins of the season. On Sunday the Storm out shot the Braves 39-22 and had Hills back in the line up but it was the Braves who came out flying as they held a 2-0 lead after the first period then scored a empty net goal with 24 seconds remaining to beat the Storm 4-1 for their first win in Sannich this season against the Storm.
The first period scoring saw Darren Cambruzzi and Trevor Verwolf beat Tyler Bachmeier then in the second Gaven Hohl made it 3-0 on a short handed effort which also ended the night for Bachmeier as he was replaced by Virtanen who shut the door the rest of the way. The Storm cut the lead to 3-1 on a Jesse Ross power play goal but that was all the Storm could muster as they dropped their 11th game of the season.
With a win and a loss and help from other teams the Storm still remain in 2nd one point up on Oceanside with 3 games in hand and 2 points up on both Pennisula and Kerry Park with one game in hand on the Panthers while having played the same amount of games as the Islanders.
Games around the VIJHL over the past week saw Pennisula knock off Victoria Thursday night 7-3 followed by Friday games that had Pennisula shutting out Oceanside 3-0 and Sannich nipping Sooke 4-3 then on Saturday Kerry Park and Oceanside tied up at 3-3 and Comox dumped Sooke 5-3. To end the week’s action on Sunday Kerry Park nipped Oceanside 4-3 and Pennisula routed Sooke 11-3.
Storm action this week saw them travel to Oceanside for a huge match up Wednesday they then return to the Brind Amour arena Friday night to face the pesky Sooke Stingers then they go back on the road for a game Sunday in Kerry Park.
Time out…..former Storm D man Jeff Forsysthe who was part of the BCHL all star game in Victoria last week returns to the Island for four games this week with his Prince George team mates beginning Wednesday in Lake Cowichan, Thursday in Port Albernie, Friday in Nanaimo then in Victoria on Saturday…Next Friday night against Pennisula is family night as two adults and two children can get in for only $25 with a always popular autograph session to follow after the game…
