Like the NFL’s New York Giants the Storm have been more successful on the road than at home lately after winning 3 of their last 4 games with all the wins coming on the road and the lone loss at home.
After being almost unbeatable at home the Storm have found more success on the road as they took road wins from Kerry Park, Victoria and Comox while losing at home to the Oceanside Generals. While wins on the road have helped the Storm to continue their battle for 2nd with Oceanside the unpredictability of the VIJHL is helping them as well as after losing to Sannich then beating them 3 days later the Storm would then lose to Oceanside who returned home Saturday all alone in 2nd place only to lose to Sannich 3-2.
The Storm began their 3 games in 3 nights on Thursday night in Victoria and came away with a well played 6-3 win then Friday night before the biggest crowd of the season they got out played in the 2nd and 3rd periods by the Generals and lost 4-2 then they travelled the next night down the highway and came away with a 5-3 win over Comox.
After the week of play in VIJHL the standings just got a whole lot tighter as only 5 points separate 2nd and 5th as the Storm sit in 2nd with 51 points tied in points with Oceanside who have played one more game than the Storm and right behind them are Pennisula with 47 and Kerry Park who have 46 points.
The league has ruled that the Storm/Sannich January 11th game will stand as a 5-0 Storm win as they have ruled that the game was complete with 3.31 remaining in the 2nd period as Sannich didn’t have a qualified goalie to complete the game so any goals or penalties after that point will not be rewarded or recorded.
On Thursday night in Victoria behind the 26 save performance from Richie Virtanen and two goals from Mateas Larock the Storm carried period leads of 2-1 and 3-2 then out scored the league’s #1 team 3-1 in the third period to win their 3rd game of the season against the Cougars.
The 1st period saw Mark McHattie and Larock on the power play to put the Storm up 2-0 before the Cougars Jimmy Carter got Victoria on the board to make it 2-1 before the intermission.
The Cougars made their power play click in the 2nd period to tie it at 2-2 but that tie only lasted a minute as Larock’s 2nd goal of the night put the Storm back up 3-2 and in the 3rd period Pat Rogan and Wes Agassiz had the Storm up 5-2. TJ Libel’s power play gave the Cougars life to make it 5-3 before Jesse Ross iced it with a goal at 17.35 to send the Storm home with a huge 6-3 win.
On Friday night before a full house at the Brind A’mour arena the Storm who came into the game in a tie with Oceanside for 2nd spot came out flying in the 1st period as they put together one of the strongest 20 minutes of the season as they out shot the Generals 10-6 and got power play goals from Larock and McHattie and killed a two man General power play to take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period where it fell apart.
The 2nd period saw the Generals come out hitting as the out hit the smaller Storm and in turn out shot them 11-3 and out scored them 3-0 on goals from Taylor Morgan, Doug Helme and Addison Ross to stun the big crowd by taking a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period.
In the 3rd the Generals never let up on their hitting and didn’t allow the Storm many quality scoring chances while they got a power play goal from Scott Mac Donald to score a 4-2 win and move back into 2nd all alone 2 points up on the Storm.
The next night the Storm travelled to Courtneay to battle the Glacier Kings and got two goals from Agassiz and a 31 save performance from Tyler Bachmeier to post a 5-3 win and coupled with Oceanside’s upset loss to Sannich it moved the Storm back into 2nd with a game in hand on the Generals.
The 1st period saw Agassiz short handed and the Kings Riley Shambrook trade goals to make it 1-1 after one then in the 2nd the Kings tied it up on a Brent Mankelow goal before McHattie and Larock with the Storm’s 2nd short handed goal made it 3-2. Before the 2nd period was over Comox tied it up on a power play goal from Brendan Naddny then in the 3rd the Storm put it away on goals from Rogan and Agassiz’s 2nd to make it 5-3 to give the Storm their 24th win of the season.
Other games around the VIJHL this past week saw Pennisula shut out Comox 4-0 on Thursday night then Friday night Sannich knocked off Pennisula 5-2 followed by Saturday night’s Kerry Park/Sooke game won by the Islanders 5-4 in overtime then on Sunday Kerry Park dumped Comox 6-2.
The Storm return to action Friday night when they host the league leading Cougars then travel to Sannich for a rematch with the suddenly hot Braves before finishing off the month with a game on Thursday the 30th in Oceanside for another important game with the Generals.
Time out……Hard to understand the ruling on the Sannich game as if the league was going to call it complete why did the insist that they returned to the ice when the reason they stopped playing was the same reason the league gave for why the game was complete Sannich had no goalies left!!!...The worst part of it all was the reason Sannich started the goalie that they did was because the other goalie was all ready injured so in turn why are the Storm having to pay the price of Sannich’s problem????...
