Confusing, strange, and bizarre any one of those words could describe Friday nights game against the Sannich Braves who ran out of healthy goalies then decided to go home only to return to the ice and get walloped 15-1 by a up beat Storm team.
It all started after the Storm had gone up 3-0 a goal mouth collision occurred when a Sannich player knocked Wes Agassiz into goaltender Danny Lundin who lost his cool and began hammering Agassiz with his blocker which got him a match penalty and a game misconduct which in turn brought in backup Devin Stankoven who let in two goals and that’s when the fun started.
On the Storms 5th goal Stankoven hurt his groin and was unable to continue leaving the Braves without a goaltender so the coach decided to pull his team off the ice with 3.34 left in the 2nd period. After the referee gave the Braves 10 minutes to return by putting someone else in goal or play 6 on 5 they decided to get on the bus and leave ending the game without playing the remaining 23.46 of the game.
After crowd made their way out of the arena the and gone home Storm officals called someone in the league and told them what was happening and in turn the Sannich team were informed that they either return to the ice and resume the game with another player in goal or the whole team would be suspended for the remainder of the season. Once they realized what could happened the Braves got off the bus and returned to the ice with defensemen Asahel Beaudet in goal to finish the game and while they gave up 10 more goals they did it in front of about only 25 fans .
After a listless effort Tuesday night where the Braves scored a 5-1 win the Storm came out energized and brought their A game as out shot the Braves 72-26 and scored 7 power play goals and used a aggressive penalty kill to set the tone early in the game. The games first goal saw Travis Gordon deflect a pass in front of the net to make it 1-0 before Coty Haikenen made it 2-0 before the end of the 1st period. In the second the Storm made it 3-0 with Mateas Larock’s first of 3 goals and soon after Lundin was kicked out of the game and Stankoven was beaten on power play goals by newcomer Mark McHattie and Pat Rogan to make it 5-0 the first of 5 straight Storm power play goals. McHattie who sits in the top 5 in league scoring with 45 points (the top point getter has 48) was picked up by the Storm earlier in the week from the Oceanside Generals and he instantly delivered for his new team as he had two goals and two assists in his Storm debut
When the game resumed almost ½ hour later Sannich was given a delay of game penalty and before the period was over with Beaudet now in goal the Storm were up 9-0 before the period was over on power play makers from Larock, Agassiz and Calen Falk before Dylan Behan closed out the 2nd period scoring on a even strength goal.
The 3rd period saw the Storm fire 26 shots at Beaudet and got goals from McHattie, Kaydon Trumbley and ,Pat Rogan to make it 12-0 before Tyler Archer spoiled Tyler Bachmeier’s 2nd straight shut out for Sannich’s lone goal. The Storm closed out the game with a even strength goal from James Issac and power play goals from Jesse Bachmeier and Larock.
The 15-1 win was by the largest goal difference in the league this season ahead of Victoria’s 13-0 win over Sooke and the Storm’s recent 12-0 win over the same Sooke team. With the win the Storm moved their record to 21-9 to stay even with Pennisula for 3rd with 45 points.
The next night the Storm hit the road for a match up with the Kerry Park Islanders and they got goals from Bachmeier, Erik Albertson ,Agassiz and Dan Baker and a 23 save performance from Richie Virtanen to nip the Islanders 4-3 to collect their 22nd win and move back all alone into 3rd spot with 47 points. First period goals from Bachmeier and Albertson had the Storm up 2-0 before the Islanders Jackson Wilson with his first of 2 goals made it 2-1 after one period. The teams traded 2nd period goals with Agassiz putting the Storm up 3-1 before Devin Marshall closed the gap to 3-2 before heading into the 3rd period. In the third the teams once again traded goals as Baker scored the eventual winner to make it 4-2 before Wilson closed out the scoring to make the final 4-3 Storm.
Action around the VIJHL over the past week saw Victoria dump Sannich 5-1 and Pennsula downed Kerry Park 7-1 Thursday night then on Friday night Oceanside slipped by Pennisula 3-1 while Saturday night saw Victoria shut out Oceanside 6-0 and Pennisula shut out Comox 2-0..
After the past week’s play Victoria continues to lead the way with a 28-5 record for 60 points followed by Oceanside at 24-10-49 ,Campbell River 22-9-47,Pennisula sits at 22-13-45, Kerry Park has a 19-12-40- record while Comox is 13-18-30, Sannich is 8-29-18 and Sooke who didn’t play over the past week sit at 3-29-6.
The storm return to action Thursday night when they ravel to Victoria to take on the #1 ranked Cougars then return home Friday night at 7.30 to take on the league’s #2 team the Oceanside Generals then they make in 3 games in 3 nights Saturday night when they travel to Courtenay to take on the Glacier Kings.
After playing against each in a busy VIJHL week players from Victoria,Pennisula,Sannich and Sooke teamed together to face players from Oceanside,Campbell River,Kerry Park and Comox in the annual North vs South All Star game Sunday hosted by the Sooke Stingers and was played at the Bear Mountain arena .On the north roster from the Storm were Richie Virtanen,Derek Hills ,Calen Falk ,Mateas Larock,Travis Gordon and Jesse Bachmeier.
Time out…..Tyson Boucher came away from Tuesday game against Sannich with a concussion after it was feared he may have broken his jaw….Derek Hills was back in the line up after hitting the boards hard in the same game and looked to be injured….What Sannich did Friday night from a fans stand point was not in the best interest for hockey or the league and for those who paid to watch a 60 minute hockey game it was a slap in the face..And for the unnecessary fighting that they provoked that doesn’t do anything to the young kids that parents bring to the game and should be dealt with by the league before Jr B hockey as we know it goes backwards!!!!
