Friday night at the Rod Brind’Amour arena almost became the Frank Slubowski show as the Comox Glacier Kings goaltender almost single handily stole a win for his team as he stopped 49 shots from the Storm but in the end the Campbell River squad’s hard work earned them a well earned 5-2 win.

The Friday night game was the 2nd of 3 in 4 four nights for the Storm as they began the 2008 new year with a narrow 1-0 loss to the Oceanside Generals in Parksville on Wednesday night then finished off the busy week with the seasons biggest win in the VIJHL this season by any team a 12-0 whitewash of the Sooke Stingers Saturday night in Sooke.

Friday saw the Storm play their best game at home this season as they skated hard every shift and were beating Comox to almost all the loose pucks and their power play had more spark than seen in any other game as they had a number chances on every power play chance and without the big saves from Slubowski the game could have easily been 10-2

Friday night’s game saw the Kings get on the score broad first as they connected on the games first power play as the Kings Brent Mankelow popped one in at 1.30 of the first period to put the Kings up 1-0 and put hopes into their minds of a possible 2nd win over the Storm in the River city this season.

After going all season without a goal Tyson Boucher possibly the most popular Storm player picked a loose puck in the slot and snapped it past Slubowski at 7.26 to tie at 1-1 with second straight home game goal.

The Storm grabbed a 2-1 lead at 11.48 on a outstanding effort from Travis Gordon who dove for a loose puck near the Comox goal line and tipped it in for a goal that would have made many highlight reels if it was a NHL or Jr A hockey game.

After out shooting the Kings 18-12 in the 1st period the Storm totally dominated the 2nd period by out shooting them 17-5 in a scoreless 20 minutes although the Storm did appear to score at 19.01. After talking with his linesman somehow the referee who was right behind the net called off the goal after talking to the linesman who was standing on the blue line but helped to somehow have the goal called off.

The Storm didn’t let the non goal call effect them as they came out in the third period and out shot the Kings 14-8 and scored three times while Comox was only able to get a single shot past the Storms Richie Virtanan .

After looking sharp on the power play all night with no results the special teams finally clicked at 3.29 as Derek Hills fed Jesse Bachmeier a perfect pass and he made no mistake to put the Storm up 3-1 but Comox wasn’t going away as on a delayed penalty at 9.09 their leading scorer Jackson Garrett made it 3-2.

So many times in hockey you see one team with a great chance at one end and not score only to have the other team come back down the ice and score and that’s just what happened Friday night and in doing so it put the Storm up 4-2. For the 2nd time in the game Comox’s Corey Alexieff had a breakaway but his feet didn’t seem to move as fast a he was and in turn he fell down without being checked and after he fell Boucher fed Pat Rogan a perfect up ice pass which he turned into his own breakaway where he made no mistake to score the Storm’s 4th goal at 17.57.

The Storm salted away their 19th win of the season on a Jesse Ross goal at 19.48 to make it 5-2 and ended the game with a 49-25 shots on goal advantage.

The next night the Storm travelled to Sooke and posted their 20th win of the season to improve to 20-8 and regained sole position of third spot with 43 points 4 behind the Generals with three games in hand and two up on the Pennisula Panthers who have two more games than the Storm. Due to someone within the workings of the VIJHL website taking holidays the goal scorers form the game were unavailable for this report.

Around the VIJHL over the past week on Thursday night league leading Victoria Cougars began a very successful week with a 4-2 win over Oceanside followed by a 2-1 overtime win Friday night over Pennisula while on the same night Kerry Park beat Sannich 5-3. On Saturday Victoria needed overtime again this time against the Glacier Kings in winning 4-3 while Pennisula nipped Sannich 3-1 then on Sunday Oceanside lost 5-2 to Kerry Park.

In league standings Victoria continues to lead the way with 56 points followed by Oceanside at 47, Storm have 43,Pennisula has 41,Kerry Park have 40,Comox Valley is at 30 followed by Sannich with 16 and Sooke sits with 8 points.

The Storm and the Sannich Braves will get to know each other really well this week as they play a make up game Tuesday night at the Brind’Amour arena then the Braves return three nights later for a rematch Friday night before the Storm head to Kerry Park for a game Saturday night against the Islanders.

It doesn’t get any easier the following week for the Storm as they play in Victoria on Thursday night followed by a home game Friday night against Oceanside then a game Saturday night in Courtenay against the Kings.

Time out…..One of the best parts of going to all the Storm games is getting to know some of the regulars and when they do well at the game it becomes somewhat special so a BIG congratulations to John who sits near me at the game and he shot a won $350 from Save on Foods…and a special note to the friendly lady who allowed him to take her chance to shoot then wouldn’t let him give her half…now that’s special!!!....Please remember to treat everyone like you wish to be treated as like a card player who couldn’t play without a full deck try living without one!!!...If we were all the same the world wouldn’t be right!!!....

Billet Families
One of the vital components to operating a successful junior hockey franchise is to provide a comfortable living environment for each one of our players. We strive to find homes that will expose our players to a positive family environment. Being a host family is an experience that we would like you to consider.
