Three unanswered goals in the third period lifted the Oceanside Generals to a hard fought 3-1 win over the Storm Sunday night and with the win they moved 6 points ahead of the 3rd place Campbell River squad.

The hard hitting fast paced game saw the Storm out shot their visitors 34-28 even thou the Generals held a 7-2 shot advantage early in the 1st period which went 4.19 into the game before the first whistle. Both teams played hard every shift with clean hard hits on almost every possession as the smaller Storm team never backed down to their bigger opponents who did out muscle the Storm to many loose pucks but the Storm scoring chances gave them a chance to win the game however the Generals just took advantage of three more opportunities than did the Storm.

The Storm carried a 1-0 lead into the 3rd period but a untimely 10 minute misconduct at the end of the 2nd period to Derek Hills proved to be their undoing as three defensive break downs led directly to all three General goals while Hills was in the penalty box.

After scoreless 1st period the Storm opened the scoring as Tyson Boucher took a pass from Pat Rogan in the slot and fired home his first goal of the season at 8.15 to give the Storm a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.

Before the second period ended Hills and a Oceanside defender got into pushing match after the whistle and instead of getting a delay of game penalty which was assessed earlier in the period for the same infraction they both received 10 minute misconducts putting the Storm #1 defensemen out of action for the first 10 minutes of the third period.

Without Hills the Storm defence suffered as their down low coverage broke down and the Generals being a good team took full advantage of the situation and it won them the game .It took the Generals only 52 seconds to even the score at 1-1 as Brynley Tourand was left all alone in front of Richie Virtanan and had no problem slipping into the open side.

Last visit to Campbell River the Generals got a overtime power play goal to grab the win and it was power play again that got them the win as they scored what turned out to be the winner at 3.37 on the power play as Alex Higgins took as pass from behind the net and one timed a shot that Virtanan had no chance on to make it 2-1. The Generals iced the game at 7.00 when two Oceanside players stood in front of the Storm net with only one Storm defenseman and they tic take toed a passing play to put the score at 3-1 with Curtis Yates the goal scorer.

The final minute of the game saw the Storm pull Virtanan who once again played a strong game making a number of big saves but they were unable to get any quality scoring chances and suffered their 7th loss of the season and their 2nd straight at home to Oceanside.

The top five teams in the VIJHL separated by only 16 points have Victoria still leading the way with a 23-5 record for 50 points followed by Oceanside at 22-7 for 45 points next are the Storm at 18-7 and 39 points then Pennisula at 18-12 and 39 points and Kerry Park at 17-10 for 36 points. The Storm hold games in hand over all 4 teams as the have 5 in hand on Victoria, 3 each on Oceanside and Pennisula and 1 on Kerry Park.

It was a quite weekend for the VIJHL after the Christmas break as besides the Storm/Generals game the only other two teams playing were the Sannich Braves and the Sooke Stingers and they spilt a pair of games with the Stingers winning at home Saturday night 3-2 then the Braves took a 6-3 win at home on Sunday night.

The Storm get right back at it this week with three games in four nights beginning Wednesday with a rematch in Parksville against the Generals then return home Friday night to play Comox then get back on the bus Saturday for a road game in Sooke.

Time out……..A reminder that the December 2nd cancelled game against Sannich has been rescheduled for Tuesday January 8th with the puck dropping at 7pm….The Storms cancelled game against Comox on December 1st will now be played Thursday February 14th in Courtenay….Rumour has it Oceanside will soon be getting stronger as they have another player on the way with Jr A experience making them one of the favourites to get off the Island after the playoffs ..if they already weren’t!!!!....

Billet Families
One of the vital components to operating a successful junior hockey franchise is to provide a comfortable living environment for each one of our players.
