A lack of a powerplay from the Storm and a timely powerplay goal in overtime by the Oceanside Generals cost the Storm their 2nd home ice loss last Friday night as the 2nd place Generals slipped out of Campbell River with a 4-3 win.

The Storm went 1 for 12 on the powerplay while also scoring a shorthanded goal but it was a questionable tripping penalty in overtime that cost them 2 points and for 24 hours had them slip from 3rd to 6th in the VIJHL.

The Storm moved back into 3rd the next afternoon as they built up a 3-0 lead in Pennisula before the Panthers scored twice in less than a minute but couldn’t get any closer as the Storm left with a 3-2 win.

On Friday night before a big home town crowd the two teams played a good fast paced hard hitting game that saw the Generals score twice on shots that fooled goaltender Richie Virtanen then connected on a nice three way passing play to win it in overtime after a late 3rd period goal from the Storm had tied it up 3-3.

After a scoreless first period where the Storm had a 10-0 shots advantage after 10 minutes Jesse Ross got the Storm on the scorebroad first at 5.26 of the 2nd period and with it came the teddy bears as it was the Storm’s annual Teddy Bear toss night that provides local kids with an extra present at Christmas and to their credit Storm fans threw 96 teddy’s on the ice 40 more than last year.

Oceanside’s Ian Hall showed why he is one of the league’s top scorers as he pulled the Generals even at 7.21 when he tipped in a hard point shot he then gave them the Generals a 2-1 lead on a shot that fooled Virtanen as he floated a shot just over the goaltenders glove hand at 10.02 to send the visitors to the dressing room with the lead.

The 3rd period wasn’t a minute old when Mateas Larock while killing a penalty stole the puck off an Oceanside defensemen at the Storm blueline then used his speed to pull away from him and go in all alone on a breakaway and snap a shot past the Generals goaltender Justin Borsa to tie the score at 2-2. On the same powerplay the Generals responded as Tyler Morgan caught Virtanen out of position as he wrapped around the net and had and found it wide open and slipped it in to put the Generals back in front 3-2.

The powerplay finally connected for the Storm at 17.33 as Tyler Wowchuk snapped a hard shot that got between inside Borsa and the post to tie the score 3-3 and send it into overtime where the powerplay won it for the Generals avenging a loss to the Storm earlier in the season.

On Sunday afternoon the Storm headed down Island to face the Panthers who were coming off an 8-3 over Sannich but found themselves down 2-0 before the first period was over on Storm goals by Larock and Dan Baker.

After a scoreless second period the Storm went up 3-0 on a Travis Gordon goal before Pennisula scored twice in 55 seconds on goals from Trevor Yee and Kory Coward to make it 3-2 but they couldn’t get any more on Virtanen as the Storm moved past the Panthers and Kerry Park into 3rd overall with their 16th win.

The Storm are back on the ice Friday night when they host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings then travel to Sooke Saturday night to face the pesky Sooke Stingers in a rematch from their game December 7th. After the Sooke road game the Storm get a Christmas break and don’t return to action until Sunday December 30th when they host those same Stingers.

Around the VIJHL this past week results saw Victoria beat Comox on Thursday 5-3 on Friday night it was Pennisula 8-3 over Sannich and Kerry Park shocked Victoria with an 8-2 pounding. On Saturday night Victoria responded with a 9-0 hammering of Sooke and Oceanside dumped Comox 7-1 then in their 3rd weekend game nipped Sannich 3-1 on Sunday.

Time Out…..Proof in the pudding came Saturday night on CRTV as the replay of the Storm game against Sooke showed Pat Rogan scoring the Storm’s 8th goal followed by Derek Hills scoring their 9th goal making the final score 9-1 not 8-1 now time to move on!!!!....The Storm loss Friday night gives them a incredible home ice record of 11-1-2 with only Sannich able to beat them at home in regulation time….Almost like watching a road game with the dark uniforms hope they get back to the white ones as they have more of a home team flair to them….Speaking of CRTV it’s great to watch the Storm games replayed on TV and it’s even better now that they have play by play by Warren Andrews who does a great job as he has done in the past…welcome back!!!!

Billet Families
One of the vital components to operating a successful junior hockey franchise is to provide a comfortable living environment for each one of our players.
