A break in the schedule had the Storm playing only one game last week but that didn't stop them from improving their home ice record to 10-1 after they beat the Kerry Park Islanders 3-2 Friday night to move back into sole possession of third spot in the VIJHL.
The win against the Islanders was their 3rd of the season against them and with it they moved two points up on the Islanders which lasted 24 hours as they moved back into a tie with the Storm ( who now have 2 games in hand) after running rough shot over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings Saturday night 7-1.
Another big performance from Richie Virtanen who stopped 31 shots and goals from Shelby Cockell, Dan Baker and Mateas Larock gave the Storm their 14th win against 6 losses left them undefeated against Kerry Park this season.
Virtanen whose play this season has been among the best in the league came up with many big saves many of the screened variety held the Storm in the game during 7 Islander power plays and was one of the key reasons that the Storm took the two points.
The first part of the 1st period was all Kerry Park as they had a 6-0 shot advantage but it took only three minutes for the Storm to rattle of 8 shots before a loose puck along the broads was picked up by Cockell who stick handled thru three Islander defenders on his way to the front of the net where he slide it past Islander net minder Riley Blinco to give the locals a 1-0 lead at 10.09 which was the way the period ended.
A two man advantage for the Islanders paid off as after Virtanen stopped a shot with his mask Sean Nuggett batted at the puck in mid-air that found its way in the back of the goal to tie it up at 1-1 at 8.54 but it only lasted for just over a minute as Dan Baker scored a short handed goal at 9.56 to put the Storm back in front 2-1.
The Islanders tied it back up at 7.43 of the third period as Virtanen kicked out a rebound into the slot right on to stick of Matt Oliphant who snapped home another power play goal to make it 2-2 before Larock scored off the face-off to notch the winning goal at 16.32 5to make it 3-2. The Islanders pulled Blinco in the last minute however a un timely icing call all but iced the win for the Storm who hung for their 8th straight home ice win
The Storm return to action this Saturday night as they travel to Courtenay to face the Glacier Kings who knocked off the Storm 6-3 two weeks ago then return home to face the Sannich Braves Sunday who are the only team to beat the Storm at home this season.
Meanwhile action else where in the VIJHL over the week on Wednesday the 21st Sannich beat Sooke 5-3 followed the next night by Victoria over Sooke 5-2 then Friday night Comox beat Pennisula 4-2 and Sannich nipped Sooke in overtime 4-3. On Saturday night Kerry Park beat Comox 7-1 and Oceanside nipped Victoria 4-3 in overtime while Sunday saw Pennisula beat Sannich 7-4 and Oceanside nipped Sooke 4-3.
In league standings Victoria continues to lead the way with 40 points followed by Oceanside at 35,Storm sit with 30 as do Kerry Park while Comox and Pennisula both sit with 26 ahead of Sannich's 16 and Sooke's 4 points.
Time out. The Storm lost a long time fan over the week as Lloyd Redford passed away making the win over Kerry Park dedicated to his time as a fan of many Storm teams..While the Storm where being out shot 6-0 by Kerry Park there happened to be problem with the PA system which eliminated music between breaks .but when it came on the Storm seemed to wake up must be something to that????...Baker's goal gave him 5 on the season and his 10th point in eight games since joining the storm while Larock's goal was his 11th of the season.
