Once again the Storm raised their competitive level last Friday night and for the 2nd time this season they beat the league leading Victoria Cougars at home 6-2 handing the Cougars only their 2nd loss of the season .both to the Storm. Then the following night the Storm once again lowered their competitive level and gave up 4 3rd period goals in a 6-3 loss to the 6th place Comox Valley Glacier Kings in Courtenay.

When it comes to teams like Victoria ,Oceanside and Kerry Park the Storm raise their level and come ready to compete however their weakness appears to be against the teams lower in the standing as they lower their level of play and struggle to compete and perform like they do against the better teams.

On Friday night the Storm lead by two goal games from Dylan Behan and captain Tyler Wowchuk lead 3-0 after the first period then held off a second period surge from the Cougars who narrowed it to 3-2 before they took a 4-2 lead into the third where they scored two more to hand the top team in the VIJHL their worst defeat of the season.

Behind the 37 save performance from Richie Virtanen the Storm played a strong defensive game and held up against the hard hitting Cougars who rocked a number of Storm players with some good clean hard hits in a game that saw the referee let the teams play with only 3 penalties called in the 1st period, two in the second then 8 in a chippy third period.

The first period saw the Cougars carry the play in out shooting the Storm 11-6 but it was the Storm who capitalised on the chances to get three goals past Cougar net minder Alexander Wong. Wowchuk who has picked up his game began playing with a lot more leadership than earlier in the season opened the scoring at 2.33 when he picked up a loose puck at centre and went in all alone and snapped a hard shot past Wong then 2 goals in the last minute of the period 13 seconds apart from Erik Albertson and Dylan Behan sent the home team to the dressing room up 3-0.

The 2nd period saw the Cougars get right back in the game with two goals from TJ Liebel and looked ready to tie it up before Mateas Larock took a blue line to blue line rink wide pass and turned on the speed to get around a Cougar defence man and beat Wong with a beautiful shot to put the Storm up 4-2 heading into the 3rd period.

After allowing the players to play their game chippiness got going in the 3rd as Victoria got frustrated with the Storm's tight checking and got away from their game which allowed the Storm to score 2 more from Behan and Wowchuk to finish off the scoring to give the Storm their 13th win of the season while Victoria suffered only second loss.

After being beaten by the Storm the Cougars took out their anger the next night by beating up on the Sooke Stingers 10-2 to keep the Stingers winless until Monday night when they picked up their 1st win of the season 4-3 over Sannich.

Saturday night saw the Storm head down to Courtenay to face the Glacier Kings who lost the to the Storm 5-4 in overtime in their last meeting and they made up for that loss by scoring 4 times on Richie Virtanen in the 3rd period to win 6-3 even thou they were out shoot by the Storm 45-30.

The team's trade goals in the first period from Calen Falk and Brett Powell then Travis Gordon notched goals around Brent Mankelow's first of three in the 2nd period as the Storm headed into the 3rd period up 3-2. The third period saw Mankelow and Kyle Peck score 2 goals each to hand the Storm their 6th loss of the season. The game was a tame affair with each team picking up only 6 penalties each with both teams scoring two power play goals.

The Storm return to action on Friday night for their only weekend game against the Kerry Park Islanders who started the week tied with the Storm for 3rd with 28 points however the Storm have one game in hand.

After another week of action league standings have Victoria sitting with 37 points followed by Oceanside at 31, Storm and Islanders tied at 28, Pennisula and Comox are tied for 5th at 24 each followed by Sannich at 9 and Sooke now with 3 points.

Games this past week saw Oceanside and Victoria battle to a 5-5 tie Thursday night followed the next night by Comox's 8-7 win over Sooke and the Islanders 3-2 win over Sannich then Saturday night saw Oceanside pound Kerry Park 7-1 with the Islanders coming back the next day with a 4-1 win over the Generals.

TIME OUT..Jared Beaulieu's return to the Storm was a short one as was unable to unseat Virtanen for the starting job so he headed back to Vancouver marking the return to the Storm for Tyler Bachmeier...Even thou it resulted in a home town win had to be impressed with the refereeing on Friday night as he allowed the game to be played ..however it will be a little frustrating when another ref comes in and calls everything he didn't' kind of makes it tough as a fan and player as to what gets called and what doesn't.take what you can!!!!
